Central Gwinnett Cluster Foundation

Can our Lawrenceville community make a difference in the lives of students and teachers in the Central Gwinnett Cluster? Sure we can! Just become involved and contribute to a legacy of excellence that built this community.

Schools have booster clubs for sports, bands, and other activities, but this Foundation's purpose is to enhance and extend the academic initiatives of the schools in the cluster. This will be the primary community organization contributing financial support to students, teachers, and schools.

The focus of the Foundation is to provide grants to teachers and schools that support the academic programs of the cluster schools. At the elementary, middle, and high school levels scholarships can be provided to advance academic achievement of students. The Foundation also wants to provide opportunities for community awareness and participation in the life of the cluster schools.

At the April 27 th evening meeting, community members, teachers, principals, and business people met to discuss the components of the Foundation. Committees were established to cover publicity, grants, fund development, events, alumni, and community.

Central Gwinnett Foundation Grant-Improving Writing Skills-K-12

Can the Central Gwinnett Cluster Foundation's $3,000 grant improve writing achievement for the students who attend the cluster schools? “Yes,” says Simonton Elementary Principal, Dr. Chandra Young. “This grant is the beginning of a major emphasis on developing and improving writing skills.”

Dr. Young and assistant principal, Shamika Simpson, coordinate the writing project for the Central Cluster schools. Teachers, assistant principals, and literacy coaches from each cluster school, K-12, make up the team. This group, titled Vertical Team, meets twice a year to find ways to improve students' writing skills. Based on Gwinnett's curriculum, their charge is to establish successful writing practices in K-12 classrooms throughout the cluster. Each year students at fifth, eighth, and eleventh grades are tested on their writing skills. State of Georgia standards are high and schools in the cluster want more students to meet and exceed these standards.

The Vertical Team's first meeting was held at Winn Holt Elementary where 46 teachers, assistant principals, principals and literacy coaches gathered to discuss ways to teach writing and to exchange ideas on how to make writing come alive in the classroom. While visiting classrooms throughout the Winn Holt School, participants observed student writing in action.
